The Northeast Normal University is a comprehensive normal university under the direct leadership of the Ministry of Education. Founded in 1946 by the Communist Party of China as the first comprehensive university in northeast China, its original name was Northeast University. It started to admit graduate students since 1953. It was approved to be a university entitled to confer doctorate and master degrees in 1981. In 1995, it passed the national examination and acceptance and became one of the universities in the first group for emphatic constructions in the “211 Project”. In 1996, it was approved to be a university entitled to have the autonomy in increasing the number of its doctorate supervisors. And in 2000, it was approved to establish a graduate school as a trial practice. Our university has positioned itself at the objective level of “research-oriented comprehensive normal university that is first class in China and well known in the world”. This will surely become a powerful driving force for the development of its degree education and graduate students education career.

The university has 18 schools that teach graduate students. It has 3 grade-1 discipline units that can confer doctorate and master degrees, 24 grade-2 discipline units that can confer doctorate degrees, and 92 master degree conferring units. Their study fields cover 10 branches of learning. It has 6 key-construction learning subjects in the 10th five-year plan and in the “211 Project”, 4 nation-level key disciplines, 18 province-level key learning disciplines, and 8 mobile post-doctorate research stations. It has 8 key labs at or above the province/ministry level, a humanity and social science research base, and an engineering research center. All this has helped form the fairly perfect platforms for our university to cultivate graduate students and to conduct scientific researches.

Our university has identified its guideline concepts and optimized its cultivation plans that focus on curriculum education for master degree students and concentrates on scientific research for doctorate students. It has reformed the cultivation models, intensified research creativity, promoted curriculum reforms, and stepped up the ideological and moral education, so the teaching and learning quality of our graduate students has been obviously raised. Since 2001, the employment rate of our university’s graduate students has been 98.5% for three consecutive years. Our university has been rated by the Ministry of Education and Jilin Province as an advanced unit in graduate employment at their graduation. Now our university has 4 976 graduate students in various fields of learning, of whom are 521 doctorate students, 3 111 master-degree students, and 1 344 master-degree students in education and university teachers who are working for their master degrees in-service.
The Graduate School is a learning-oriented team full of creativity and vitality. It has six sections (offices). It has intensified its internal administration. It has been rated as “national advanced unit in degree and graduate student education administration”,“national advanced unit in graduate student enrollment in higher learning institutions”,etc.
